THE ANNUNCIATION TO MARY
LUKE 1:26-38
26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to Nazareth, a city in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary, who was betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.
28 The angel appeared to her and said, “Greetings! You are greatly favoured and the Lord is with you. Among women, you are blessed.” 29 When Mary saw the angel, she was disturbed by had said and wondered what the greeting was all about. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, because you have found favour with God. 31 Listen, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you must name Him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Highest. The Lord God will give Him the throne of his father David 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob for ages. Of His kingdom, there will be no end.”
34 Then Mary asked the angel, “How will this happen, given that I’ve never had sex?
35 The angel answered her, saying, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Highest will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one, whom you will give birth to, will be called the Son of God. 36 Know this, also, your cousin, Elizabeth, has also conceived a son in her old age and this is now the sixth month of pregnancy, for her who was called barren. 37 With God, nothing will be impossible.”
38 Then Mary said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. May it be unto me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
THE ANNUNCIATION TO JOSEPH
Matthew 1:18-23
18 When Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph, and before they had sex, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
19 On finding out, Joseph her husband, who was a just man, and who did not want to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her privately. 20 While he was considering doing so, however, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife, because she was impregnated by the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son and you must name Him Jesus, because He will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this happened as a fulfilment of what had been spoken of the Lord by the prophet, who had said, 23 “Behold, a virgin will conceive and give birth to son and He will be called ‘Emmanuel’, which, when interpreted, means ‘God with us’.”
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.
